What is homeowners exemption, who qualifies, how to apply and when to file your claim.
Did you know California can receive tax savings on the home they live in as their principal place of residence?
Homeowners exemption, which allows a $7,000 exemption for property taxation. To qualify for the exemption, the following conditions must be met:
You must occupied the dwelling as your principal residence as of January 1 of each year to qualify for that year.
You must be the property owner
How to apply for home exemption complete form BOE-266, claim for home owners property tax exemption you can claim your form from the county assessor office where the property is located. Submit the completed form to the same office. Once the exception has been granted, it remains an effect until a change in eligibility occurs, such as selling or moving out of the home annual filing is not required.
Went to file your claim anytime after you become eligible, but no later than February 15 to receive the full $7,000 exemption. Claim that are filed after February 15, but on or before December 10 of that same year will be allowed 80% of the exemption. No exceptions for the current year can be allowed if filed after December 10.
